History of Ripon Amateur Operatic Society
Ripon Operatic Society was founded in 1940. Originally the Society only produced works by Gilbert & Sullivan, before moving on to a wider range of musical productions.   Despite the war, the Society continued to flourish during its early years assisted by the Orchestra of the Royal Engineers who were also based in Ripon. The Society were keen not to let the war get in the way and performed during these times both in Ripon and at The Royal Hall.   Early productions were performed at The Opera House, the Claro Theatre (at the Army Camp) and Ripon Grammar School before the Society began performing at Harrogate Theatre in 1987.   The Society bought its rehearsal hall in 1960 after a frantic fund raising effort was matched with a generous donation by a supporter.
